Sub FM is a great online radio station. They play “Dubstep, Garage, Grime, Dub, Niche, Wonky and more!” Follow them on Twitter- twitter.com/subfm – and they spit out a huge (around 100mb) mp3 of music every few hours. Awesome.

Thanks to my friend Russell for this, the awesome logo for my new band. He’s definitely put more effort into it than we have into the actual band.

The inspiration was a kind of Soviet-era military badge. Many many more badges like this at Collect Russia.

I am a big fan of steampunk, retro analogue gadgets and chunky Soviet tech. So I was overjoyed to find this beaut for a mere 300yen in a junk shop recently. It’s a Nikon… something or other video camera. There’s no model number. The guy in the shop reliably informed me that it didn’t work (oh really). He said it was about 30 or 40 years old.

I love it! There are switches, levers, triggers and buttons galore and they all make a satisfying *click* when pressed. It also weighs a ton and could probably survive a house falling on it. It’s such a shame it doesn’t work. Certainly something I can look into fixing up in the future, although the film for it would probably cost more than just buying a new camera.

There’s also this light sensor that my friend Bruce gave me in a massive box of stuff when he left Japan.  It was made in Russia somewhere almost 20 years ago (according to the print inside the leather carry case). It’s called a Leningrad 8 and features a bewildering array of numbers and dials for the simple purpose of determining what kind of… erm, lens to use in your 15-ton directive-issued propaganda camera, I think.

Coaster juxtaposition entirely intentional.

“Between job contracts” is not the same as unemployed. but it might as well be. I’m 3 months behind on my rent(180000yen), have 150000yen of tax to pay,  as well as a stack of bills to the tune of 50000yen. This. Is. Not. Good.

Still, always good to have some time off, eh? I started a project from MAKE to circuit-bend a Casio keyboard. Currently it’s still in pieces as my cheap-ass Dremel knockoff refuses to cut through plastic with the circular saw bit so I have to use the drill bit instead which is taking AGES.

Bin info

This is because of some international conference or other going on in Hokkaido. Which is approximately 500 miles away on a different island. There was also a sign informing us that police officers will be riding on buses for the same period.

Despite this sign, everyone was still putting things in the bin and the station staff were still emptying it. It’s also worth noting that there are hardly any bins anywhere in Japan, apart from in train stations and outside convenience stores. And, the obligatory “all terrorist acts carried out in Japan have been performed by Japanese people”. Although I don’t think that’s really applicable in this case.
